Understanding Your Body Fat Percentage
Your Body Fat Percentage is a critical metric for understanding your overall health and fitness. Unlike the standard Body Mass Index (BMI), which only accounts for height and weight, body fat percentage distinguishes between fat mass and lean muscle mass. Our calculator uses the widely trusted U.S. Navy Method to estimate this for you.
How the U.S. Navy Method Works
The U.S. Department of Defense developed this formula to evaluate the body composition of service members. It relies on taking simple circumference measurements rather than using expensive equipment like DEXA scans or calipers.
- For Men: It compares the circumference of your waist and neck against your height.
- For Women: It requires measuring the waist, neck, and hips to account for differences in fat distribution.
Why is this better than BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a useful population screening tool, but it fails on an individual level. For example, a highly muscular athlete and an unfit individual could both weigh 90 kg at a height of 175 cm. BMI would classify both as "Overweight." However, a Body Fat calculation would correctly show the athlete has 10% body fat (Lean) while the other person might have 28% body fat (Overweight).
How to Measure Accurately
To get the most accurate results from this calculator:
- Waist: Measure horizontally around your navel (belly button) for men, and at the narrowest point of the abdomen for women.
- Neck: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple), keeping the tape flat.
- Hips (Women only): Measure at the widest portion of the buttocks.
